African Grey Parrot Lifespan: How Long Do They Really Live?

A Grey is not a 10-year commitment. It's a 50-year one — closer to adopting a child than buying a pet. Here's what the numbers actually look like.

The Short Answer

A healthy, well-cared-for African Grey parrot lives 40 to 60 years in captivity. The oldest documented bird lived past 55, and several unofficial reports exist of Greys reaching their 70s. In the wild, lifespans drop to 20–30 years due to predators, disease, and food scarcity.

Why Pet Greys Often Die Young

The gap between "average home" and "optimal care" is mostly diet and toxin exposure. Most pet Greys never reach their potential lifespan. The big killers, in order:

  1. Seed-only diets. Cause fatty liver disease and calcium deficiency — the #1 preventable killer. Switch to pellets + fresh veg.
  2. Teflon/PTFE fumes. Non-stick pans, space heaters, and self-cleaning ovens release fumes that kill birds in minutes. Remove from any home with a parrot.
  3. Aspergillosis. A fungal infection from damp food, wet bedding, or poor ventilation.
  4. Feather destructive behaviour from chronic boredom and stress, often escalating to self-mutilation.
  5. Heavy metal poisoning from cheap cages, old paint, or costume jewelry.

How to Maximize Your Grey's Lifespan

  • Diet: 60–70% high-quality pellets (Harrison's, TOP's, Roudybush), 25% fresh vegetables, 10% fruit and nuts.
  • Vet care: Annual avian vet check-up with blood panel. Find a certified avian vet, not a general practice.
  • Out-of-cage time: Minimum 3–4 hours a day. Greys without enrichment develop neurotic behaviours that shorten life.
  • Stable household: Greys imprint hard. Moves, divorces, and new pets cause measurable stress-illness.
  • Plan for outliving you: Name a guardian in your will. We see Greys rehomed in their 40s when owners die.

Congo vs Timneh: Does It Matter?

Both subspecies have nearly identical lifespans of 40–60 years. Timnehs tend to be calmer and less prone to phobic behaviours, which means slightly less chronic stress — but the difference in actual years is negligible. Choose based on temperament, not longevity.
