Buyer's Guide

Best Parrots for Beginners

Not every parrot is a good first bird. Start with one of these seven — you'll enjoy the hobby instead of drowning in it.

The Top 7

1. Budgerigar (Budgie)

Small, quiet, cheap, and surprisingly good talkers. The gateway parrot.

Lifespan: 7–15 yrs · Noise: Low

2. Cockatiel

Gentle, whistles more than screams, cuddly. Almost never bites hard.

Lifespan: 15–25 yrs · Noise: Low–Medium

3. Green-Cheek Conure

Playful, quieter than other conures, tolerates handling from multiple people.

Lifespan: 20–30 yrs · Noise: Medium

4. Parrotlet

Tiny but bold. Big-bird personality in a budgie body. Needs firm boundaries.

Lifespan: 15–20 yrs · Noise: Low

5. Pyrrhura Conures (Painted, Pearly)

Cousin of Green-Cheeks. Sweet, curious, apartment-friendly.

Lifespan: 20–25 yrs · Noise: Medium

6. Lineolated Parakeet (Linnie)

Quiet, mellow, walks more than flies. Rare gem for calm households.

Lifespan: 10–15 yrs · Noise: Very Low

7. Senegal Parrot

Small Poicephalus with big-parrot brains. Independent but bonded.

Lifespan: 25–30 yrs · Noise: Medium

Avoid as a First Bird

Cockatoo

Loud, needy, prone to feather-plucking. Rehomed more than any other parrot.

Macaw

Powerful beak, ear-splitting scream, needs a room-sized cage.

African Grey

Brilliant but emotionally fragile. First-time mistakes cause lifelong phobias.

How to Choose

Match the bird to your quietest hour of the day, not your loudest. A parrot that screams during your Zoom calls is a parrot you'll rehome. Also budget double what the breeder quotes — cage, vet, and food add up fast.
