Parrot Body Language Explained

Parrots tell you everything — with their eyes, feathers, and posture. Learn to read the 15 signals every owner should know.

Eye pinning (pupils dilate/contract fast)

High arousal — excitement OR aggression. Read context.

Fluffing up briefly then shaking

Resetting feathers — content and relaxed.

Staying fluffed for hours

Sick. Vet visit, today.

Beak grinding at rest

Deep contentment, usually before sleep.

Tail fanning + wings held out

Warning. Back off — bite risk high.

Head bowed, feathers ruffled on head

Asking for a scratch.

Regurgitating food toward you

Bond behavior — you're 'flock'.

Wing flapping while gripping perch

Exercise — happy energy release.

Beak clicking (single click)

Territorial warning.

Yawning repeatedly

Ear/crop stretch — usually normal.

Foot in air, standing on one leg

Relaxed. Resting.

Quiet talking to self

Practicing new sounds — leave alone.

Screaming at dawn/dusk

Flock call — instinctive, cannot be trained out.

Feather picking

Boredom, stress, allergy, or medical. Investigate immediately.

Frozen still, staring up

Predator alarm — check ceiling fans, birds outside.

Rule of Thumb

Any body-language signal must be read in context. Pinned eyes during play = excitement; pinned eyes when a stranger reaches in = bite risk. Always look at the whole bird before you touch.
