What Actually Kills Pet Parrots Early
- Non-stick cookware (PTFE/Teflon): fumes are lethal within minutes.
- All-seed diets: cause fatty liver disease — the #1 killer of Amazons and Greys.
- Air fresheners, scented candles, aerosols: respiratory system is extremely sensitive.
- Avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, onion, garlic: toxic even in tiny amounts.
- Untreated illness: parrots hide sickness until it's critical. Yearly avian vet check is non-negotiable.
How to Add Years to Their Life
- Feed 60–70% pellets, 20–30% fresh veg, 10% fruit/seed.
- 12 hours of dark, quiet sleep every night.
- 3+ hours of out-of-cage time and mental enrichment daily.
- Annual avian vet visit + bloodwork every 2–3 years.
- Plan for who will care for them after you — most big parrots outlive their first owner.
